Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an exciting range of betting options and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi low.
