Omaha Hi/Low: General Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
