Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, as well as a few battling for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
