Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and a few battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
