Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low.
