Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo offers an exciting collection of wagering options and seeing that you have many players trying for the high, as well as many battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
