Omaha Hi/Lo: General Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
