Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
