Omaha Hi/Low: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high, and several shooting for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
