Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
