Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering choices and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
