Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand.
