Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha High-Low.
