Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, and several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi/low.
