Omaha Hi Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
