Omaha Hi Lo: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as many trying for the low.
