Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand.
