Omaha Hi/Lo: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting options and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi lo.
